Pfizer, BioNTech to provide COVID vaccines for Olympics

Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE announced on Thursday that they have signed a deal with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to donate their coronavirus vaccine to help vaccinate athletes, and the accompanying delegations, in the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games that are set to begin later this summer.

Under the deal, the National Olympic Committees will work with Pfizer and BioNTech "to understand and work to help address the local need for vaccine doses for national delegations’ participation in the Games," while the companies will start delivering doses to the delegates at the end of May.

IOC President Thomas Bach commented on the deal saying that "this donation of the vaccine is another tool in our toolbox of measures to help make the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 safe and secure for all participants and to show solidarity with our gracious Japanese hosts." Pfizer Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla also noted that the company was "proud to play a role in providing vaccines to athletes and national Olympic delegations."
