EU close to new deal on 1.8B Pfizer, BioNTech jabs

The European Commission stated on Friday it expects to approve a new deal with Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE to acquire 1.8 billion doses of their vaccine against COVID-19 soon.

Back in April, the European Union revealed it has decided to exercise an option under an existing agreement with the two companies to buy another 100 million shots of their jab.

The announcement comes after EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell noted the pace of vaccination against the virus around the globe is "far too slow to deal effectively with the pandemic worldwide." On the other hand, Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton said the bloc is on track to meet its goal concerning inoculation by mid-July.
