FDA approves Pfizer vaccine for ages 12-15

The United States Food and Drug Administration approved the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for ages 12 to 15.

Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock stated that the authorization marks a "significant step in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic," adding that it "allows for a younger population to be protected from COVID-19." The regulatory body has determined that the vaccine "met the statutory criteria to amend the EUA [emergency use authorization]," and that the known and potential benefits outweigh the risk, therefore "supporting the vaccine’s use in this population."

The US has become the second country to approve the Pfizer-BioNTech jab for adolescents following Canada, while the vaccine manufacturers have filed for the full use of their coronavirus vaccine.
