EPA issues fuel waivers to address shortages

The United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy (DOE) have released a letter on Tuesday, where they stated that after monitoring the fuel supply following the cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline, it's been determined that the shutdown did affect gasoline supplies and therefore the government issued waivers for some fuel requirements.

The waiver is set to minimize or prevent disruption in the "extreme and unusual fuel supply circumstance" and will affect Washington D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia through May 18.

"This extreme and unusual fuel circumstance is the result of a cyberattack on Colonial Pipeline's computer systems, an event that could not reasonably have been foreseen and is not attributable to a lack of prudent planning on the part of suppliers of the fuel to these areas," the letter read.
