UK trade deficit down to £1.4B in quarter to March

The United Kingdom's total trade deficit excluding precious metals fell by £8.4 billion in the three months ending with March 2021 to land at £1.4 billion, according to a report by the Office for National Statistics released on Wednesday.

Imports decreased by 12.3% or £14.5 billion, while exports dropped by £7 billion, an 8.7% change, the report showed. The goods trade deficit widened by £7.6 billion and the services trade surplus rose by £0.8 billion, the report noted.

Exports of goods with the EU, excluding precious metals, rose by £1 billion, or 8.6%, while imports were £0.8 billion or 4.5% higher in March 2021.
