COVID crisis could have been prevented - independent panel

The Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response released a report on the world's handling of the coronavirus pandemic on Wednesday stating that the global crisis could have been prevented if proper measures had been taken.

The panel concluded that the world is currently not ready to prevent another pathogen from reaching pandemic levels in the future and suggested that the World Health Organization (WHO) should be granted more financing and more authority in publishing outbreak-related information. According to the panel, the WHO should have declared a public health emergency sooner, while countries took too long to implement measures to curb the virus's spread.

The group also urged rich countries to donate at least one billion vaccine doses to COVAX by September and emphasized the importance of agreeing on voluntary licensing and transfer of vaccine technology to increase global supply. "Our message is simple and clear: the current system failed to protect us from the COVID-19 pandemic. And if we do not act to change it now, it will not protect us from the next pandemic threat, which could happen at any time," stated Panel Co-Chair and former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
