Amazon starts new healthcare project 'Diagnostics' - report

Amazon is working on launching a new healthcare line of business, currently internally called "Amazon Diagnostics", that would offer customers at-home medical testing for COVID-19 virus, as well as for other respiratory and sexually transmitted diseases, Insider outlet reported on Monday, citing sources directly involved with the matter.

The Diagnostics project is considered to be highly confidential and employs around 300 people, mostly recruited from within Amazon. According to sources, senior executives of the company are fully involved in the development of the business, while Doug Herrington, the senior vice-president of North America Consumer is leading the team.

Long-term plans for Amazon Diagnostics include creating a third-party marketplace for home tests and genomic examinations, where independent labs could offer the services directly to consumers. So far, the team considered starting to offer Amazon's first COVID-19 testing kits on company's Prime Day in June.
