German antitrust office launches new probe into Amazon

Germany's competition regulator, Federal Cartel Office, unveiled on Tuesday that it has launched an investigation into the retail company Inc.'s "potential anti-competitive practices."

The office explained that it will have a wider set of means available to investigate the retail giant's dealings thanks to the new law, adopted in the country in January 2021.

"In a first step, we are looking at whether Amazon is of outstanding, cross-market importance for competition," Federal Cartel Office Director Andreas Mundt stated, adding that the new law allows the office to "take early action against and prohibit possible anti-competitive practices by Amazon."
