DUP leader suggests UK discards NI protocol

Edwin Poots, the new leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) spoke in an interview on Tuesday, saying that maintaining a Brexit border in the Irish Sea is regrettably "playing fast and loose with the peace process". He advised the British government to "go it alone" and scrap the controversial Northern Ireland Protocol.

"We need to get to a circumstance where I'm sure the European Union don't really want to do harm to the people of Northern Ireland and recognise with the UK government that they need to draw back," he stated, adding that when fully implemented, the weekly checks will have an "impact on every him in Northern Ireland".

Poots has been urging the European Union and the UK to revere the arrangement. He will also formally succeed Arlene Foster in the party leader position when his election is ratified next week.
