Maas: US waiving some Nord Stream sanctions

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas confirmed on Wednesday the United States is waiving some of the sanctions it has planned to impose on Nord Stream AG, the company behind the construction of the eponymous pipeline.

"We see this as a constructive step which we are happy to further discuss with our partners in Washington," Maas said. "But I think we have won another three-month time for discussions with those responsible in Washington on how to proceed."

His remarks come after the report US President Joe Biden will waive sanctions on Nord Stream 2 as he is not ready to compromise the country's relations with Germany. Meanwhile, White House Deputy Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre commented Washington has "clearly signaled that the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is a bad deal" but did not give additional information on potential penalties.
