China warns ByteDance, Microsoft over illegal data collection

The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) instructed on Friday companies behind 105 mobile phone applications, including Microsoft Corporation's LinkedIn and ByteDance LTD's TikTok, to delete data the agency deems was illegally collected from users.

The CAC stated the aforementioned apps violated several of the country's laws by obtaining personal information through "illegal access, over-collection, and excessive authorization." All of them have been given 15 days to address the issue.

The news comes following the newest reports that Microsoft is preparing to bid for buying TikTok in case the latter's negotiations with Oracle Corporation fail. Meanwhile, it was alleged ByteDance decided to delay filing for an initial public offering (IPO) amid issues with meeting both the United States and China's regulatory demands.
