Ryanair plane hijacking attack on democracy - Von der Leyen

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described on Tuesday the forced landing of the Ryanair plane that was flying from Athens to Vilnius, which she labeled "hijacking," as an attack on democracy, freedom of speech, and European sovereignty.

"[Belarusian opposition figure] Roman Protasevich & [his partner] Sofia Sapega must be released immediately," she reaffirmed the European Union's calls. Von der Leyen previously threatened Minsk with "serious consequences" if it does not "become democratic."

Earlier, European Council President Charles Michel described the event as a ploy to detain Protasevich. Meanwhile, Belarus claimed it landed the plane after learning that Hamas is allegedly planning to blow it up.
