US consumer confidence down slightly in May

The United States Consumer Sentiment Index came in at 117.2 in May, down 0.3 index points compared to the previous month, a report by the Conference Board showed on Tuesday.

The Present Situation Index rose by 12.4 index points to 144.3, while the Expectations Index declined by 8.8 index points to 99.1.

"Overall, consumers remain optimistic, and confidence should remain resilient in the short term, as vaccination rates climb, COVID-19 cases decline further, and the economy fully reopens," Conference Board's Senior Director of Economic Indicators Lynn Franco commented in the report.
