Taiwan accuses China of blocking BioNTech vaccine deal

President of Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party, Tsai Ing-wen, openly accused China on Wednesday of preventing the island from acquiring COVID-19 vaccines from German BioNTech SE.

The statement comes after China's Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical Group reportedly offered last weekend to supply Taiwan with the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines. However, Taiwan's Health Minister Chen Shih-Chung claimed there was no official proposal made by Fosun.

BioNTech refused to provide comments on the matter, saying that it is "supportive of global vaccine supply." Taiwan to date administered just over 300,000 vaccine doses to its nearly 24 million population.
