Tesla to make utility-scale batteries in Japan - report

Tesla Inc.'s Japanese subsidiary is planning to enter the country's market for large rechargeable batteries, the Nikkei reported on Thursday.

According to the report, the company plans to make grid storage batteries such as those for solar power generation. Tesla is said to have recently started operating its large-scale lithium-ion battery storage product Megapack at a Takasago Thermal Engineering facility in the Ibaraki prefecture.

Until now, the company's Japanese unit focused on small storage batteries for home use.
