Senate GOP blocks formation of January 6 commission

Senate Republicans blocked the passage of a bill on Friday that would have established a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6 Capitol riots.

Six Republicans broke ranks and joined Democrats in the Senate in voting in favor of the measure, however, the bill failed to reach the 60-vote threshold in the end. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has spoken out against the bill in public in the days leading up to today's vote.

Former President Donald Trump, who was impeached over his role in the January 6 events, also came out against the proposal to form a commission to investigate the riots, calling it a "Democrat trap."
