J&J's appeal of $2.1B in asbestos-related damages rejected by SCOTUS

United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) on Tuesday rejected Johnson & Johnson's appeal of a verdict that required it to pay $2.12 billion to plaintiffs who sought damages for suffering cancer after using the company's products.

A total of 22 women from 12 states, nine of whom have died in the meantime, had sued the pharmaceutical giant in Missouri over J&J's baby powder and other talc products containing asbestos and causing ovarian cancer.

A Missouri jury ordered J&J to pay $4.7 billion, but the damages were reduced to $2.12 billion after the company appealed to the state Court of Appeals.
