Israel elects Isaac Herzog as new president

Israel's Knesset elected Isaac Herzog (pictured) on Wednesday as the country's eleventh president, with 87 out of the 120 votes going to him. His opponent Miriam Peretz received only 26 votes from the Knesset.

In his first address as president Herzog stated that he intends to "fight antisemitism and hatred of Israel" while safekeeping the country's democracy. Additionally, he said that he plans to encourage entrepreneurship and "build bridges within Israeli society and the Jewish diaspora."

Herzog is currently the head of the largest Jewish nonprofit organization in the world, the Jewish Agency for Israel, and was the former leader of the Labor Party in Israel. He is also the son of Israel's sixth president Chaim Herzog.
