Biden unveils COVID-19 vaccine donation plan

The administration of United States President Joe Biden unveiled on Thursday how it will distribute the first 25 million excess coronavirus vaccines it plans on donating to foreign countries.

Most of the vaccine doses, about 19 million, will be donated to countries in Central and South America, Asia and Africa through the World Health Organization's COVAX initiative. The remaining 6 million are set to be split directly among several countries, including Mexico, Canada and South Korea.

"We are sharing these doses not to secure favors or extract concessions. We are sharing these vaccines to save lives and to lead the world in bringing an end to the pandemic, with the power of our example and with our values," Biden said in a statement. The US president has pledged to give away 80 million COVID-19 vaccine doses by the end of June.
