UK approves Pfizer vaccine for 12-15 year olds

The United Kingdom Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced on Friday that it has approved the use of the coronavirus vaccine developed by Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE in adolescents aged from 12 to 15 years old.

MHRA Chief Executive June Raine stated that the regulator has reviewed the clinical data, concluding that it was "safe and effective in this age group" and that the benefits of the vaccine "outweigh any risk." Additionally, she stated that they have strategies in place to monitor the further safety of the vaccine once they start being administered to the adolescents.

With the approval, it is now up to the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) to advise when this age group can start getting inoculated. The UK is the latest country to approve the use of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for those aged 12 to 15, following Canada and the United States.
