UK to investigate Amazon over data usage - report

The United Kingdom's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is expected to launch a formal antitrust investigation into Inc., the Financial Times reported on Thursday.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the paper stipulated that the CMA is analyzing how the online retailer uses the data it gathers through its platform and how it determines which merchants appear first on the screen when it is time to purchase a product. Moreover, the investigation may also look into whether merchants that use Amazon's other services are given preferential treatment to those that don't.

The competition investigation would be the latest in a slew of probes into tech companies, with Amazon already being investigated in the European Union and Germany, while other companies such as Google and Facebook also found themselves under intense scrutiny.
