Italy accuses Booking.com of tax evasion

Italy accused the Dutch online travel agency Booking.com of not paying tax in the country, Italian media reported on Thursday.

According to the reports, investigators from the First Group of the provincial command of Genoa and Chiavari determined that the company should have paid annual taxes in the value of €153 million, but due to them not identifying in Italy and not submitting the relative declaration they succeded in "achieving total tax evasion, which was not paid either in Italy or in the Netherlands."

The investigation, which started in 2018, looked at nearly 900,000 transactions stemming from 2013 to 2019, and it was concluded that the travel agency issued invoices without the value-added tax (VAT), using the so-called "reverse charge" mechanism even where it was not applicable.
