Amazon rivals Canal+ over streaming French football - report

French organization Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) received two competing offers for streaming rights of the country's national football championship the Ligue 1 from a historic broadcaster of the event Canal+ TV company and from the American online retail giant Amazon, RMC Sport reported on Friday.

The contract in focus would give streaming rights to all championship games through 2024. As negotiations among all parties escalate, Amazon is reported to have made a bigger offer. The bidding numbers are unknown, but Maxim Saada, the head of Canal+, had said in an earlier interview that the cost of Ligue 1 has averaged €650 million per year since 2005.

This would be Amazon's second attempt to obtain the rights to streaming LFP games after it failed to reach an agreement in the February tender. Amazon has already purchased TV rights to the English Premier League, as well as Italian and German football championships in 2021-2022.
