G7 divided on stance towards China - US official

The Group of Seven (G7) had differences of opinion on how to proceed with a common approach to China, according to a White House transcript of a press briefing of a senior Biden administration official.

The official also hinted that United States President Joe Biden, United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emanuel Macron were in favor of taking a tougher position against China.

On the other hand, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel wanted to focus on the "cooperative nature of the relationship" with China.
