G7 to commit to net-zero emissions by 2050

The Group of Seven is "signing off on a landmark joint commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050" at the latest, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted from the G7 summit on Sunday. The group will commit to "keeping a 1.5-degree temperature rise within reach" and "do everything we can" to adhere to that goal, she added.

The G7 partners also agreed to phase out coal. "The G7 agreement to end global coal finance is a great achievement and sends a strong message to the world," Von der Leyen said ahead of the group's joint communique which should officially confirm these plans.
