Europe closes mixed on Fed's hawkish forecast

European equities ended the trading session on Thursday mixed as traders across the globe reacted to the Federal Reserve's rate hike forecast. The hawkish tone set by the Fed, which now expects two rate hikes in 2023, was accompanied by a rally in bank stocks in Europe earlier in the day.

On the other hand, the United Kingdom reported the highest number of daily COVID-19 infections since February 19. Additionally, German biopharmaceutical company CureVac said its coronavirus vaccine candidate was only 47% effective in a late-stage clinical trial. Shares of CureVac plunged over 40% on the news today.

The DAX closed 0.11% in the green while MTU Aero Engines was the strongest performer. The CAC 40 gained 0.20% as BNP Paribas rose over 1%. The FTSE 100 fell 0.44%; Halma led the losses in London.
