US extends border closure with Canada, Mexico

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that the restrictions of non-essential travel across the country's border with Mexico and Canada will remain in place until July 21.

In a statement released on Twitter, the DHS attributed the decision to the intent to "reduce the spread of COVID-19," and underlined that it will ensure that the essential "trade and travel" function uninterruptedly.

"DHS also notes positive developments in recent weeks and is participating with other US agencies in the White House's expert working groups with Canada and Mexico to identify the conditions under which restrictions may be eased safely and sustainably," the statement concluded.
