Borrell: Belarus sanctions designed to change behaviour

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell (pictured) stated on Monday that the new sanctions are designed to change the people's behaviour in Belarus.

Borrell noted that he hopes the behaviour will change because the sanctions "damage the Belarus economy," and added that the EU wouldn't be instituting the sanctions if it didn't believe they would work. Additionally, he asserted that the EU thought "very carefully" about what personal and economic sanctions they wanted to instate, adding that the bloc wasn't afraid to impose another round of sanctions if the current ones don't prove to be effective.

Earlier, the United States and the EU imposed sanctions on Belarus over its decision to ground a Ryanair flight last month carrying opposition journalists onboard.
