AZ, Pfizer jabs effective against Indian COVID variant - study

The COVID-19 vaccines developed by AstraZeneca and Pfizer/BioNTech were found to be effective against Delta and Kappa COVID-19 variants originating from India, according to a study published in journal Cell on Wednesday.

"There is no evidence of widespread escape suggesting that the current generation of vaccines will provide protection against the B.1.617 lineage," the research noted referring to Indian variants, however adding some breakthrough infections could appear due to a lower presence of antibodies in the blood.

A similar study concluded last week that both vaccines are more than 90% effective in preventing symptoms caused by the Indian coronavirus strain.
