France, Germany urge for better EU-Russia relations - report

France and Germany advocated for a new European Union strategy towards Russia, one that calls for a closer engagement with the country, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the two country's ambassadors presented their proposal to the other EU Member States, as they want to build on the summit held between the heads of the United States and Russia last week. Additionally, Germany's Merkel and France's Macron want the bloc to invite Russia's Vladimir Putin to a summit with its leaders, with Merkel pushing to find a format for the EU to speak as one on the topic of Russia.

Relations between the EU and Russia have been frosty in the previous weeks, with Russian officials labeling the bloc's new policy towards the country as "medieval" and Brussels renewing its sanctions on Crimea.
