Amazon carbon emissions surge despite global drop

Amazon Inc.'s carbon emissions registered a yearly increase of as much as 19% last year despite a global downward trend amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The American tech giant noted in its annual sustainability report published on Wednesday that it emitted 60.64 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2020, citing business expansion as the reason behind the surge.

However, Amazon lowered its carbon intensity as part of plans to become carbon neutral by 2040. "This year-over-year carbon intensity comparison reflects our early progress to decarbonize our operations as we also continue to grow as a company," the report concluded.
