Tokyo state of emergency confirmed through August 22

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga declared the fourth state of emergency in Tokyo on Thursday after holding a meeting of the government's coronavirus task force.

The government decided to take that step as it fears hospitals may become overburdened due to coronavirus resurgence.

Since the restrictive measures will remain in place for six weeks, through August 22, it is highly likely that the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony on July 23 will be held without spectators, according to Kyodo News.
