Social media 'aids and abets' COVID misinformation - official

United States Surgeon General Vivek Murthy (pictured) stated on Sunday that social media platforms "aided and abetted" in the spread of coronavirus misinformation

Murthy asserted that social media companies, like Facebook, allowed COVID-19 misinformation to "spread like wildfire," thus directly hurting people's health and "costing lives." While he did admit that some companies took positive steps to deal with the problem of spreading false information, Murthy noted that those steps aren't enough and that the government is still seeing a "significant" spread of misinformation on those platforms.

Murthy's comments are in line with the recent statements made by the White House and US President Joe Biden, as the administration tries to clamp down on coronavirus misinformation, particularly that on the safety and effectiveness of vaccines. On the other hand, Facebook rejected the notion that it was somehow responsible for people not getting vaccinated.
