Asia trades lower as pandemic fears mount

Shares on the major equity indexes in the Asia-Pacific region traded lower on Tuesday as worries over the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic weighed on sentiment among traders. Both the European markets and Wall Street closed sharply lower the day prior.

In news regarding the central banks in the region, the People's Bank of China voted against changing the key interest rates in July, while the Reserve Bank of Australia's minutes said that a rate hike might occur in 2024, at the earliest.

The Nikkei 225 lost 0.89% at 7:14 am CET, while the dollar traded flat against the yen at 109.4830 a minute later. The Shanghai Composite slid 0.53% at 7:00 am CET and the Shenzhen Composite declined 0.46% at the same time. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng tumbled 1.21% at 7:16 am CET, while South Korea's Kospi concurrently surrendered 0.69%. The Australian S&P/ASX decreased 0.59% at 7:17 am CET.
