TSMC to open chip factory in Japan by 2023 - report

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) intends to have its chip plant in Japan up and running "as early as 2023," the Nikkei reported on Wednesday, citing sources with knowledge on the matter.

The opening of the Kumamoto factory will unfold in two phases, while the investment strategy will be sorted out in the current trimester, the report explained.

The sources also told the outlet that TSMC will consider giving its main customer in Japan, Sony Group Corporation, "more say" in running the plant and "negotiating with the Japanese government."
