US medical groups call for mandatory jab for health workers

Medical groups in the United States, including the American Medical Association and the American Nurses Association, stressed the need for mandatory vaccinations against the coronavirus for healthcare workers, the Washington Post reported on Monday.

In a joint statement shared with the paper, the groups stated that they "call for all health care and long-term care employers to require their employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19," adding that the "health and safety of the nation" depends on it. The report also noted that nearly 40% of nursing home staff weren't fully vaccinated and that around 25% of hospital staff that is in contact with patients hasn't been vaccinated.

The plea comes amid a surge of cases in the country, with the daily number of cases quadrupling over the course of July. US President Joe Biden urged people to get vaccinated over the weekend, as Dr. Anthony Fauci warned of COVID outbreaks among the unvaccinated.
