Japan considers extending Tokyo, Okinawa emergency - report

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is set to meet with his ministers to discuss an extension of the state of emergency across the country as coronavirus cases continue to rise significantly, Japanese media reported on Thursday.

According to the report, the government is primarily considering extending the state of emergency in Tokyo and Okinawa, as well as imposing a state of emergency to three other prefectures in the Tokyo metropolitan area. It is currently unknown how long the potential extension will be. Later reports also indicated that the extension may also apply to Osaka, as daily cases in the prefecture are above 900 since early May.

Japan has been seeing record cases over the past few days, as both Tokyo and Okinawa registered today their highest daily case numbers since the pandemic began.
