UK imposes new sanctions on Belarus

The United Kingdom announced on Monday that it has imposed additional sanctions on Belarus because of the detention of journalist Roman Protasevich and his partner Sofia Sapega.

The sanctions include a ban on Belarusian air carriers from flying over or landing in the UK, alongside prevention of providing technical assistance to Belarus' President Lukashenko's fleet of aircraft. Additionally, sanctions on new trade goods were introduced, and financial measures that prohibit the purchase of transferable securities and money-market instruments issued by the Belarusian state or state-owned banks.

UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab (pictured) commented on the sanctions: "The Lukashenko regime continues to crush democracy and violate human rights in Belarus. These sanctions demonstrate that the UK will not accept Lukashenko’s actions since the fraudulent election."
