WHO urges govts to 'depoliticize' COVID origin probe

The World Health Organization (WHO) outlined on Thursday the next steps needed to determine the origins of COVID-19 and called on countries to "depoliticize the situation and cooperate to accelerate the origins studies."

"WHO reiterates that the search for the origins of SARS-CoV-2 is not and should not be an exercise in attributing blame, finger-pointing or political point-scoring. It is vitally important to know how the COVID-19 pandemic began, to set an example for establishing the origins of all future animal-human spillover events," the WHO stated.

In March, WHO experts concluded it is "likely to very likely" that the coronavirus reached humans from a bat through an "intermediary animal" and "extremely unlikely" that the virus was first transmitted following an incident in a laboratory. However, the agency decided to follow up on the initial report and conduct a second-phase investigation into the virus' origins.
