US opens lower with data, earnings in focus

Major stock markets in the United States opened lower on Tuesday, as investors digested the latest quarterly earnings and economic data reports. For July, industrial production registered a better-than-expected increase, while retail sales fell short of market expectations. Meanwhile, in business, Walmart and Home Depot recorded yearly gains in their total revenues and net sales respectively.

The Dow Jones opened 0.66% in the red, led by the Home Depot losing 3.95%. The Nasdaq 100 began the session 0.80% lower, with Pinduoduo dropping 6.60%. The S&P 500 decreased 0.64 % at the start of trading, as Albemarle Corp fell 2.38%.

The euro declined 0.40% against the dollar trading for $1.17317 at 9:31 am ET.
