Japan's Suga to resign as prime minister

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said he intends to resign from his post as early as this month.

The prime minister announced his decision at the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) board meeting, explaining that he would not seek re-election as the ruling party chairman. Suga's term ends on September 30.

Formerly the chief cabinet secretary, Suga replaced the nation's longest-serving head of the government Shinzo Abe, who left his post last year after experiencing health problems.
