US markets open higher as Dow gains 280 points

Shares in the United States started the week with gains, with the Dow Jones jumping 280 points. The Biden administration is set to announce new COVID-19 measures "especially on the global front." Meanwhile, Democrats continue to struggle to get enough votes together for the $3.5 trillion spending package.

The Dow Jones soared 0.66% or 280 points at 9:30 am ET, with Chevron Corp. adding 1.69%. A minute later, the Nasdaq 100 was up by 0.72%, led by Applied Materials, which increased by 2.46%. The S&P 500 gained 0.77% as EOG Resources Inc. soared 4.62%.

The euro traded 0.14% lower compared to the dollar and sold for 1.17935 at 9:32 am ET.
