Japan's claims of intl. law violation are wrong - Seoul

South Korea's Foreign Ministry dismissed on Tuesday claims by Japan that a recent court ruling in favor of the seizure of Japanese corporate assets in the nation is a violation of international law. The ministry's statement described the move as a "unilateral, arbitrary claim" that was "by no means in line with facts."

The Supreme Court of Korea rejected an appeal by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. against an earlier 2018 ruling that ordered the Japanese company to compensate South Korean women who claimed either they or their relatives undertook forced labor for the company in World War II.

Tokyo's position is that any right to claims was settled in 1965 when the two countries normalized ties and that any such compensation orders are a breach of international law. Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato warned on Monday that the deterioration in relations between the nations could result in a "serious situation".
