US annual inflation at 5.3% in August

The United States Consumer Price Index for all items in the country grew 5.3% year-on-year in August, according to the country's Bureau of Labor Statistics data published on Tuesday. Compared to the prior month, the index was 0.3% higher.

The energy index contributed the most to the monthly increase, rising 2.0%, mainly due to a 2.8% growth in gasoline prices. The index for food climbed 0.4%.

Meanwhile, the index for all items except food and energy advanced 0.1%, the smallest increase since February this year. Year-over-year, the same index was 4.0% higher.
