Race for Japan's LDP leader starts officially

The campaigns to elect the new leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) began officially on Friday.

The candidates to become acting Prime Minister Yohishide Suga are Administrative and Regulatory Reform Minister Taro Kono, former Foreign Affairs Minister Fumio Kishida, and two former Internal Affairs and Communications Ministers, Sanae Takaichi and Seiko Noda.

Earlier this month, Suga expressed his wish to resign after his tenure as the party's leader expires on September 30.
