Spain asks airlines not to fly over volcano-hit island

Spain's air navigation company, known in Spanish as Aeropuertos Espanoles y Navegacion Aerea (AENA), announced in a statement on Sunday that airlines have been requested to refrain from flying over the Canary Islands after a volcano erupted on one of the archipelago's main islands, La Palma.

A spokesperson for Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez (pictured) unveiled the prime minister will postpone his visit to the United States and will travel to the affected island first.

The island's first volcano eruption in 50 years resulted in lava discharge and plums of smoke, while the at-risk population been asked to evacuate earlier during the week.
