Von der Leyen: Treatment of France unacceptable

European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen described France's treatment by Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States as unacceptable in an interview with CNN on Monday.

Speaking in the context of the recently announced AUKUS security pact, which effectively nullified an existing submarine production contract between Australia and France, von der Leyen warned that "one of our member states has been treated in a way that is not acceptable, so we want to know what happened and why, before you keep on going with business as usual."

The remarks bode ominously for the next round of EU-Australia free trade talks which were scheduled for October. European Commission Spokesman Eric Mamer said that the Commission was analyzing "the impact that the AUKUS announcement would have on this schedule."
