Australia to open borders by Christmas - minister

Australia's Tourism Minister Dan Tehan (pictured) said on Wednesday the country will allow its citizens to travel overseas once the vaccination rate in their state reaches 80%, which he expects will happen by Christmas at the latest.

"People will be able to freely travel outside Australia with no restrictions," Tehan said at a National Press Club of Australia event. "Obviously, it will be dependent on the requirements that are put in place of the countries that they are traveling with," he added.

Australia, which has mostly kept borders for non-resident foreigners closed since March 2020, is looking to create "travel bubbles" with some countries to reduce quarantine time, Tehan noted.
