US opens lower to close out volatile week

Major stock markets in the United States opened lower on Friday, following a week of gains and losses. Investors will also be looking ahead to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's remarks on the economic recovery after markets open, with housing data also due out later today.

In other news, Elon Musk predicted that the ongoing chip shortage won't last long, while the GOP seems poised to retake the majority in the Senate, and the AUKUS security deal is still creating tensions in global diplomacy.

The Dow Jones started 0.29% in the red, as Boeing dropped 0.85%. The Nasdaq 100 was down by 0.62% at the opening bell, with Pinduoduo dropping 2.26%, led by Nike's decline of 5.51%. The S&P 500 began 0.39% lower. The euro lost 0.20% to the dollar trading for $1.17150 at 9:32 am ET.
