Half of UK gas stations outside motorways run dry

Chair of the United Kingdom Petrol Retailers Association Brian Madderson stated on Sunday that a survey of the association's members showed that between 50% and 85% of independent gas stations in the country have now run dry.

Madderson said that the cause of the disruption is people panic buying gas, with the survey showing that, over the weekend, demand had surged five times the normal level. Moreover, he blasted the government for its response to the crisis, saying that its "dragging its feet over the issue."

Madderson noted that this number excludes gas stations on motorways forecourts and some supermarkets, which have been prioritized by gas companies. Earlier today, UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said that the government will introduce a range of measures to help with the crisis.
